Students from Nepal Engineering College (nec) showcased their research contributions at the International Conference on Sustainable Development, organized by United International University (UIU) in collaboration with the Institute of Development Studies and Sustainability. The conference brought together researchers, academics, and practitioners from around the world to exchange ideas on sustainability challenges and innovative solutions.
Ms. Priyanka Kunwar, a student of the M.Sc. Interdisciplinary Water Resource Management program, presented her research titled “Gender-Differential Impacts and Challenges of Water Poverty in Kathmandu Metropolitan City in the Context of Climate Change.” The study examines how water scarcity disproportionately affects different genders in urban settings, highlighting the need for inclusive and climate-resilient water management strategies. The paper was co-authored by Priyanka Kunwar, Robert Dongol, Sudip Pokhrel, and Pragya Khatiwada.
In another presentation, Ms. Ojaswi Dhakal and Mr. Bishwanath Kafle presented their research on “Locally Sourced Himalayan Bamboo as Longitudinal Reinforcement in Concrete Beams: Mechanical Bond and Flexural Performance Benchmarking Against
Steel.” The study explores sustainable construction materials by evaluating the performance of bamboo as an alternative to conventional steel reinforcement. The paper was co-authored by Manish Bhujel, Santosh Baral, and Ram Hari Shrestha.
The participation of nec students in this international conference highlights the institution’s growing emphasis on research, innovation, and sustainability. Their work contributes to critical discussions on climate change adaptation, resource management, and sustainable construction practices, reflecting the academic excellence and research capacity of the college.
