Abstract

Nepal's Bagmati Province grapples with infrastructure challenges, particularly in motorable bridge construction, necessitating a reevaluation conventional project delivery methods like Design Bid Build (DBB). To address this, the study assesses the challenges and opportunities of the Design-Build (DB) model for motorable bridges. The objectives encompass identifying these challenges and opportunities and proposing remedial measures for the challenges figured out. The study's methodology involves questionnaire surveys and five key informant interviews, with data analyzed using relative important index (RII) and thematic analysis. The study area, Bagmati Province, was selected for its diverse topography and significant infrastructure development initiatives, making it an ideal context for understanding the complexities of the design build model in bridge construction projects. The results reveal significant challenges such as design errors, different attitude of decision makers towards risk, gap in the body of knowledge and different perspective view from owner and service provider, alongside opportunities including greater allocation of risks to contractors, early contractor involvement in design stage, greater responsibility for contractors to communicate with other team members and maximize the use of resource between project team members. Remedial measures proposed include enhanced design review processes, risk management workshops, develop comprehensive stakeholder engagement strategies and integrated communication platforms. Overall, the study highlights the potential benefits of the design build model while recognizing the need for comprehensive strategies to overcome associated challenges. Recommendations for successful implementation include programs to educate on design build model, processes to handle design changes, comprehensive strategies for integrating stakeholder input and platforms for effective coordination ensures the timely completion of motorable bridge construction projects in Bagmati Province.
