Abstract
A high-rise building is defined as a building that is taller than 25 meters according to
National Building Code of Nepal. High rise building construction projects have
considerably high risk and high accidents rate mainly due to the nature of work. The
main objective of this study is to identify the safety practices adopted, perception of
workers regarding safety practices and suggest possible remedial measures. 10 high
rise building projects which were under construction were selected for study area.
Primary data were collected through field observation and checklist, questionnaire
survey with stakeholders and workers, and KII with 4 safety experts. Secondary data
were collected through literature review, different codes such as Labor act, NBC code,
PPMO, and documents from the site's office of selected building projects. Collected
data was then analyzed using MS Excel for RII, Blooms cutoff, and SPSS for
Spearman’s Rho Correlation. KII and thematic analysis were conducted to suggest
remedial measures to improve safety practices in selected high rise building.
The study found that the level of safety practices adopted in the construction project
were in low level from stakeholders and workers point of view. In contrast, the
perception of workers regarding safety practices were in high level. Similarly, this
study also found the low implemented safety practices due to various causes such as
no appointment of safety officer, no safety budget allocate, lack of safety inspection,
no recognition or reward, no medical examination and lack of emergency evacuation
plan.. In conclusion, this thesis explores safety practices adopted in selected high rise
building construction projects. The result revealed a noteworthy gap between the high
level of perception regarding safety practices and the low level of actual safety
practices among workers. Similarly, performance of safety practices among
stakeholders (client, consultants and contractors) is also low. Expert suggestion on
improving the safety practices are competent manpower, advocacy and awareness
campaign, enforcement of agencies and training center , incentives, regular medical
examination and mandatory rule of presence of safety officer and safety budget.
