Abstract

After the massive Gorkha earthquake, the Nepal National Building Code (NNBC) has been modified in 2020, incorporating the hazard level of all the cities and municipalities of the country. Though the concerned authority advised to use NBC 105:2020, IS 1893:2016 codes are widely used throughout the country. Along with strength, the expense of constructing a safe structure is equally crucial, particularly in developing countries like Nepal. To ensure the both safety and reasonable construction cost, selection of suitable design codes are important. Therefore, the objective of this study is to compare the quantity (Concrete and Reinforcement) and the overall cost of residential buildings designed using two different codes, Nepal Building Code (NBC) 105:2020 and Indian Standard (IS) 1893:2016 and also to identify the relevant codes to design residential buildings and the reason to implement that particular code. This study also identifies the causes for the quantity and cost differences due to two distinct seismic design codes. Different possible approaches are used to acquire the data and results, questionnaire survey with the experienced design expert and structurally analyzing and designing the selected 10 sample buildings at Nagarjun Municipality with both NBC 105:2020 and IS 1893:2016 codes. The equivalent static method is used to design the selected sample buildings. The nonlinear static (Pushover Analysis) was also performed to compare the strength and the seismic performance of buildings. The results show that the quantities of concrete and reinforcement and the overall cost of residential buildings increase using NBC 105:2020 compared with IS 1893:2016. The increment of concrete quantity is 2% - 10%, reinforcement is 1.3% - 3% and the overall increment in cost is 2% - 17%. The reason to cause such difference is due to increase in seismic weight, Base shear, restriction to use high grade material (M25 Grade concrete for building above 12m) and also the additional ductile detailing clauses included in NBC 105:2020. The capacity (Strength) of building designed as per NBC is higher than those designed as per IS code. The performance in terms of formation of hinges in structural member of building designed as per NBC 105:2020 are better than those designed as per IS 1893:2016.
