Abstract

The satisfaction of employees in their jobs significantly influences the success and effectiveness of an organization. This research aims to assess the job satisfaction levels of civil engineers working in private organizations, specifically in consulting firms and construction companies in Kathmandu Valley. Additionally, the study seeks to establish connections between job satisfaction and various job-related factors and find the relation between demographic factors. Based on the findings, the research endeavours to propose strategies to enhance the job satisfaction of civil engineers in the private sector. This study draws upon primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were collected through the distribution of questionnaires and conducting Key Informant Interviews (KII). Secondary data were obtained through a comprehensive review of relevant research literature. The 151 questionnaires were administered to consulting firms and construction companies within the Kathmandu Valley. Out of the 151 questionnaires distributed, 130 were distributed electronically using Google Forms, while 21 were physically distributed to the respondents' office premises. A total of 120 valid questionnaires (equivalent to a 76.87% response rate) were collected and utilized for subsequent data analysis. To ensure the collected data's reliability, the construct variables' internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha. The computed alpha values for all the constructs exceeded the threshold of 0.8, indicating a satisfactory level of consistency within the dataset. The study adopted descriptive and interferential statistical techniques to analyse the variables, using Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS) and MS Excel. The satisfaction level of civil engineers was (3.375 out of 5) a moderate level of satisfaction from the summation job factor method. Seven job-related factors had different levels of satisfaction in their job. Engineers were less satisfied with their pay and salary (2.85 of 5) but satisfied with the role of co-workers (3.80 of 5). The study found statistically significant correlations at the 0.01 level, indicating a strong association between job satisfaction and the job-related variables assessed. Regression analysis indicated a strong fit (R = 0.934) and a high level of explained variability (R- squared = 0.872). The high R-squared indicates 87.2% of the variability in job satisfaction can be explained by these predictors.
