Abstract

This thesis critically examines community awareness and preparedness for earthquake resilience in Bidur Municipality, located in Nuwakot district. Focused on urban vulnerability to seismic events, the study pursues three primary objectives: evaluating earthquake risk and preparedness awareness, identifying factors influencing preparedness, and proposing measures for enhanced community readiness. A total of 93 respondents, strategically sampled across different wards, including residents, ward representatives, and expert engineers, participated in the primary data collection. Utilizing a structured questionnaire and key informant interviews, the research applied the Relative Importance Index (RII) for a quantitative analysis and thematic analysis to extract qualitative insights from expert perspectives. The analysis reveals perspectives on awareness levels, and the belief in community awareness. A strong Spearman correlation coefficient indicates synchronized understanding among residents, ward representatives, and expert engineers, emphasizing a shared commitment to earthquake awareness and preparedness. The study identified community engagement and educational backgrounds as central to community resilience. Cultural beliefs, resource accessibility, and information availability emerge as significant factors. Despite some variations, the high Spearman rank correlation coefficient suggests consistent perceptions, crucial for designing interventions with the diverse perspectives within the community. In conclusion, consensus among respondents emphasizes the effectiveness of specific measures like community workshops and school-based education. Divergent views on community-led campaigns highlight the need for tailored approaches. The high Spearman rank correlation coefficient affirms a shared understanding, laying the foundation for targeted strategies to improve earthquake awareness and preparedness. The research recommends community-specific awareness campaigns, interactive training programs, school-based initiatives, and multichannel information dissemination.
