Abstract

Nepal lies in a highly active seismic zone, with rapid growth for construction of the residential building in urban areas, demands for the evaluation of the building materials that are both seismically and economically viable. This research presents a comparative analysis of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) and Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) for a pre-design residential building in Kathmandu valley, using non-linear static pushover analysis for seismic performance. This research provides the direct comparative analysis and seismic performance of the building with masonry infill between these two blocks. The main objective of this research is to provide the seismic performance of a reinforced concrete frame building and economical option in construction of the wall infilled with AAC masonry compare to the CSEB in residential building with varying height. It also provides the information about the vulnerability of the building structural elements in different masonry infill. This thesis tends to determine the behavior of building by changing the infill material while all other variable remaining same. The pushover analysis was conducted in ETABS to generate capacity curve incompliance with the codes. The key evaluation metrics were roof displacement, inter-story drift, performance point and hinges formation in the building during ground motion. The performance of the brick masonry building was set as the baseline for evaluating the structural and economic advantages of the alternative infill materials. The comparative results demonstrate that AAC model building exhibits about 1.09 times more roof displacement with 2.6 times less inter-story drift and about half the seismic demand during earthquake than CSEB. The hinge formation sequence is within life safety limit of AAC whereas CSEB exceeds. A cost analysis revealed that using AAC as infills reduces about 6% in total construction cost than CSEB by 2 reducing the structural elements quantity and its’ larger unit size decreases construction time.
