Abstract
The construction industry is crucial for economic growth in developing countries, impacting
education, employment, and global positioning. Interlocking concrete pavers, known for
their durability and versatility, are vital in various outdoor applications. Though their use
dates back to ancient times, modern development began in the Netherlands post-World War
II. To meet rising demand, global quality control standards such as ASTM C936, EN 1338,
and IS 15658 have been established. In Nepal, traditional methods were replaced by
standardized practices with the introduction of NS 593 in 2021. Enhancing this sector
requires a focus on quality control, technological innovation, workforce development,
sustainable practices, market expansion, and government support.
This research aims to explore the advantages and disadvantages of NS Certified interlock
pavers in Nepal. The research also aims to identify the government demand and supply from
NS Certified manufacturers. Finally, the study aims to identify the challenges and
opportunities for NS Certified Pavers from the point of view from manufacturers,
contractors, and engineers.
A mix of primary and secondary data collection techniques was used for the study. Primary
data sources included engineers from government organizations, representatives from
companies manufacturing interlock pavers, contractors using the pavers, and representatives
from NBSM and FNCCI. Secondary data was gathered from government databases, and
different online platform
The findings show an increasing demand for interlock pavers in the domestic market.
Production and supply have also risen, keeping pace with anticipated changes in demand.
Despite the industry not yet being fully mature, as indicated by manufacturers, there is
potential for market growth due to the benefits cited by contractors and engineers. Private
demand is increasing, even as government demand slows, suggesting future market growth.
Challenges such as lack of government support, market immature, high investment costs,
and difficulties in ensuring consistent quality could hinder growth. However, the
opportunities arise from advantage such as ease of supply, easy repair and maintenance,
groundwater recharge, and strong compressive strength.
